The green recycling bins near Rutland Water won first prize in a Swiss competition to find recycling containers in different parts of the world.
Other recycling container locations entered into the competition included the Galapagos Islands and Barcelona.
The competition, sponsored by the Swiss organisation “P.E.T. Recycling” which makes soft drinks bottles out of polyethelene-teraphthalate, was open to all Swiss residents and was won by a teacher who was in the UK on a biology course organised by Oakham School.
Richard Greenaway from Rutland Friends of the Earth who was informed of the success of the bins because of the label on the front of them said: “It is a great fillip for Friends of the Earth who sponsored the green painted collection bins.
“Out of all the other locations entered into the competition it seems curious that Rutland gets the prize.”
The photo was originally taken in 2007 but has only recently won the prize.
